They do different jobs
Scaling removes plaque and hardened deposits from tooth surfaces. Polishing addresses selected surface stains. Your dental hygienist chooses care based on your needs.
Ask about your own teeth
Let your provider know about sensitivity, veneers, crowns or other dental work. You can ask which areas need attention and how the approach is selected for those surfaces.
Keep the conversation going
Ask what to expect afterwards, what to do if discomfort persists, and which home-care changes would help. Care should be based on an assessment, rather than an automatic treatment schedule.
General education. Your provider’s assessment guides your own care.
